I never saw the turn coming

Dear Reader,

This week, our family escaped to beautiful Sun Valley, Idaho.

We spent our mornings doing one of my favorite things — biking to breakfast with my husband, my two daughters, my grandchildren, and extended family.

On Thursday, we biked to Hailey, Idaho. After breakfast, everyone decided to head over to a pump track.

I’ll be honest.

I did not even know what a pump track was.

I like biking on the road. Smooth paths. Predictable turns. Nothing too surprising.

I am not a mountain biker.

The day before, we had gone to a pump track in Ketchum. That one had a paved section, so I tried it. It went straight up and down, and I thought, “Hey, I can do this.”

So when we got to the pump track in Hailey, I watched the 10- and 12-year-old boys riding the bigger track and decided I would try it too.

Without asking anyone.

Without really thinking it through.

On my very beautiful, very pink, very heavy e-bike.

That was my first mistake.

The first turn was sharp.

Very sharp.

And instead of making the curve, I rode straight off the edge like it was a little cliff.

I landed on my right wrist and hand.

Then my 50-pound e-bike landed on my shoulder, ribs, and chin.

I left with a splint, a sore wrist, a bruised shoulder, a zinger on my chin, and a very clear reminder:

Unexpected turns matter.

And that made me think about business.

Most entrepreneurs do not get thrown off track because of one big disaster.

Usually, it is the unexpected turn.

A big client leaves.

Sales slow down.

Rent goes up.

Payroll hits before cash comes in.

Taxes are due.

A surprise expense lands at the worst possible time.

And if your finances are not organized before the turn comes, that turn can knock you completely off track.

That is the difference between Stressed Karen and Strategic Karen.

Stressed Karen checks the bank balance and hopes there is enough for payroll.

Strategic Karen has a plan.

Stressed Karen chases more revenue and prays it fixes everything.

Strategic Karen knows where the money is going before it is spent.

Stressed Karen reacts to every surprise.

Strategic Karen has cash set aside, clear accounts, and a system that helps her make decisions with confidence.

Life will always throw curves.

The question is:

Will your business be ready for them?

Starting August 1st, I am opening a few seats in my 8-week Cash Flow Mastermind.

This will be a small group where I will work with you weekly to help you:

• Organize your money
• Understand your numbers
• Build a simple cash flow system
• Stop leading from fear
• Start making decisions like a strategic CEO

We will work on your mindset, your money, and the way you lead your business.

Because the goal is not to keep riding full speed and hope you make the turn.

The goal is to build a business that can handle the curves.

If you want one of the remaining seats, reply to this email and let me know.

Profitably Yours,

Dear Reader, One of my daughters is an incredibly gifted sewist. Now, I'm old school. I would call her a seamstress. But she assures me that the new, hip Instagram word is "sewist." She makes the most adorable beach covers for her children. Sun covers, swimsuit cover-ups, whatever you want to call them - they are darling. And they get used. They live three miles from the beach, so around their house, a cover-up isn't a cute accessory. It's required equipment. Those little ones would be crispy...

Dear Reader, The day after my pump track spill in Sun Valley, I slept in at the Airbnb. I was resting my wrist, shoulder, ribs, and chin after riding my beautiful pink e-bike straight off a turn I did not understand. So while I was home recovering, the rest of the extended family biked to breakfast. Then they went on the gondola up the ski slope. My daughters and the babies stayed at the top to play and enjoy the view. But Brace, my son-in-law, and a few brave riders decided to do the...

Dear Reader, Have you ever seen A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder? It is one of the most entertaining shows I've ever watched. Great story. Laugh-out-loud funny. And it has a secret. One actor plays a handful of the characters in the show. The same man keeps showing up in each murder scene. Different costume. Different voice. Different walk. And most of the audience doesn't fully catch on until the end. One actor. All those parts. Sound familiar? If you're a solopreneur, that's you....
