January Is Compliance Month (Don’t Get Caught Off Guard)

Dear Reader,

January always puts compliance top of mind for me.

Especially if you run a business in states like California, New York, Illinois, or Oregon—places where employment rules, benefits requirements, and reporting laws change often.

If you don’t have a system to track those changes, you’re left hoping nothing slips through the cracks.

Years ago, when I owned a large music school in Orange County, I got an email from Gusto that stopped me in my tracks.

It said something like:
“Hey — a new law just passed. By June, every employer needs to offer a retirement plan. Even if your janitor works one hour a week.”

That was not something I had planned for.

But because Gusto flagged it early, I had time to make a smart decision.
I could use CalSavers for free through the state, or choose a vendor through Gusto. Either way, I stayed compliant—and avoided a costly scramble.

That’s what good systems do.
They don’t just process payroll.
They protect you.

Beyond payroll, Gusto:
• Handles W-2 and 1099 filings
• Files payroll taxes automatically
• Manages compliance across multiple states
• Keeps you informed as rules change

If you’re doing payroll manually, through QuickBooks, or with a provider that doesn’t handle compliance end-to-end, it may be time to rethink that setup.

Especially if your team is spread across different states (like mine has been). Gusto knows how to handle the complexity so you don’t have to.

As business owners, we shouldn’t just do what’s easiest or what we’ve “always done.”
We need to make strategic decisions that protect our companies and give us peace of mind.

If compliance has been a question mark for you, this is worth a closer look.

January is a great time to clean this up—and set your business up to run smoothly all year long.

Dear Reader, Several years ago we were in Hurricane, Utah, spending time with our cousins. My husband, my two daughters, and I went ATV-ing with our favorite cousins. If you’ve never been to that part of Utah, everything is red.Red dirt. Red sand. Red rocks. I made one critical mistake:I wore a cute shirt I actually liked. That shirt is now permanently stained red. Lesson learned — don’t wear nice clothes when you’re riding ATVs in southern Utah. After the ride, we parked the ATVs in the...

Dear Reader, When I was growing up, church activities were our entertainment — especially in middle school and high school. And the big event every weekend was a dance. I grew up in Southern California, in Riverside. My dad was a professor at UCR, so we went wherever the dances were happening — Riverside, Costa Mesa, Corona, Irvine — whatever church gym was hosting that week. Now here’s the funny part. My background was ballet. Serious ballet.Nutcracker every year. Pointe shoes.Three to five...

Dear Reader, As you know, we’ve moved to Utah, and lately we’ve been unpacking the garage and closets to get ready for a party this weekend. In the middle of it all, my husband brought me a box from his office and said, “I think this is yours.” Inside were three old, envelope-sized wallets. One was black and sparkly. One had fun pictures on it.One was simple blue leather. And instantly, I was taken back about ten years. Back then, I used a full envelope system. I would literally go to the...
